Band sessions
The weekly two-hour band sessions are rehearsals, social gatherings and a regular meeting space. We have a keyboard, drum kit, PA system, percussion and lots of sheet music. Members work on songs for events, perform to each other and try out new music. Almost everyone likes to sing solos and we aim for a culture of mutual support and encouragement, so everyone feels confident to have a go if they want to. Members all get involved in the session as a whole. Equally, people are welcome to come along and listen, and there are always roles to be filled, like setting up the equipment or making tea. Plenty of tea and biscuits are consumed, and the world put to rights over the tea cups. |
Socialising and Support
We run occasional social events; sometimes sharing live music and a meal together at the church, or going out to a local pub or café. Most members have lived experience of mental illness - ranging from significant life-limiting symptoms present daily to well-managed conditions - or former experiences which mean they have empathy with others and together benefit from a supportive group which helps maintain their well-being. Members are supported individually with follow-up telephone calls, home visits and 1:1 meetings with the project leader, Sarah Wilson, to help their participation and foster their sense of belonging to a special music community. |
Outreach
Band for Life is involved with a local care home in Bethnal Green and another mental health project in Shadwell, bringing music therapy to those living with dementia and other illness which restricts their lives. Band for Life members set up the equipment and lead the singing, helping others participate and enjoy the sessions, while benefitting themselves from the opportunity of a role and responsibility in supporting others to access music, and a sense of purpose which is so important for mental wellbeing. The project meets Fridays 1.45 – 4pm at Bow Road Methodist Church 1 Merchant Street Bow, London E3 4LY |
